Motor vehicle crashes are rarely the result of a single factor. Instead, driver, vehicle and environmental elements usually combine to contribute to a crash. The three most common factors that increase the risk of a crash are fatigue, drinking alcohol, and speeding.

In 2006, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted the Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) to examine the reasons for serious crashes involving large trucks. The study defined large trucks as those with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 pounds. The study investigated a national sample of fatal and injury crashes between April 2001 and December 2003, with each crash involving at least one large truck and resulting in at least one fatality or injury. The total sample of 963 crashes included 1,123 large trucks, 959 non-truck motor vehicles, 249 fatalities, and 1,654 injuries.

The LTCCS found that drivers of large trucks involved in truck accidents are 10 times more likely to be the cause of the crash than external factors, such as weather, road conditions or vehicle performance. The conduct or lack of conduct by truck drivers and drivers of other cars involved were cited as being the reason for 88 percent of the crashes.

In descending order, the top 10 factors coded for large trucks and their drivers were:

  • Brake problems
  • Traffic flow interruption (congestion, previous crash)
  • Prescription drug use
  • Traveling too fast for conditions
  • Unfamiliarity with roadway
  • Roadway problems
  • Required to stop before crash (traffic control device, crosswalk)
  • Over-the-counter drug use
  • Inadequate surveillance
  • Fatigue ( many drivers spend a full day behind the wheel or are pressured to skip mandated sleep breaks in order to meet shipping deadlines)
